When it comes to keeping fit, there’s not much that Carly Newson hasn’t tried her hand at. She’s a former dancer (contemporary, ballet, tap – you name it, she’s done it) who devised has her own ‘Ballet Butt & Barre’ workout, was a Nike Training Club instructor, practices yoga and pilates, and is a qualified personal trainer who runs her own studio with her equally-fit husband, Elia Siaperas (that’s him with Carly above). Phew! We managed to squeeze in a quick catch up with the super-busy fitness fanatic (who’s also a member of our expert network) to chat circuits, chicken wraps and why health and fitness fads are the enemy…
Hi Carly! You’ve done so much in your fitness career, but what’s your favourite way to workout?
I really enjoy circuit-based training. I tend to post my circuit workouts on my Instagram page (@carlynewson). I weight train five to six days a week, but I love to incorporate bodyweight and plyometric drills in to a circuit style session. I love the feeling I get afterwards; my heart rate pumping and energy levels high.
Are there any health and fitness apps that use to complement your workout?
I swear by the Nike+ Training Club app. tend to use this app at home if I need a quick workout blast or whilst on holiday; I love the fact you can do workouts ranging from five to forty-five minutes. You can choose over 100 workouts designed by Nike master trainers and athletes, and it’s a great way to keep motivated and track your progress with your crew.
Which five artists are currently high on your workout playlist?
I love listening to a wide range of music! At the moment, and in no particular order, I’m listening to Drake, Axwell, Swedish House Mafia, Prok & Fitch and Lil’ Wayne
What’s your favourite healthy meal?
It’s so simple; I go for chicken and peppers in a wrap. I make a little dip with Greek yoghurt and a drop of Nando’s mild sauce, and voilà!
And when you’re treating yourself, what do you eat?
M&S cheesecake!
You always looks great. How do you stay stylish when you workout?
I love wearing bright colours and funky leggings, and I always try and match my bra top to my trainers!
(Above: Carly recommends circuits and matching your sports bra to your trainers!)
As a personal trainer who works out pretty much every day, how do you stay motivated to get out there and train? Especially when it’s cold outside like it is at the moment!
For me, training doesn’t feel like a chore – I am motivated by my job and working out just fits in easily around it. I am lucky enough to be surrounded by family and my husband who are all in the fitness industry which makes living a healthy lifestyle and keeping motivated even easier.
Finally, what makes you happy?
Seeing my clients reach their goals is extremely rewarding and seeing my business FlexPT grow puts a big smile on my face!
